It is important that a foreign student coming to the U.S. learn about the culture and ways of living before they arrive. KoAm's staff in Korea work hard to recruit and prepare students to succeed in our exchange student program. 

Here is the process each KoAm exchange student goes through to come to the U.S. 

1.  The Korean parents attend an informational seminar on the KoAm Student Exchange Program. The parents come to the office or call for more information and receive counseling on the children's academic career path.

2.  As the Korean parents and students decide to join the program, KoAm makes sure the students are ready and their motivation for participation is compatible with our goals and mission. At this time, the Korean parents and students go over and agree to the "Terms of Participation" of KoAm's guidelines.

3.  The Students take the SLEP (Secondary Language English Proficiency) test. Students who score below the minimum scores can come back the next year, or will be requested to take intensive English courses until departure. Students submit Korean School records.

4. The students and parents fill out the Student Profile, including a letter to the host family, and upload pictures through KoAm's website.

5.  KoAm staff review the Student Profile with the students and parents, and provide a training about life in the U.S. The students take a Behavioral Screening Survey, which KoAm uses to train them about living in the U.S. KoAm also provides the family with KoAm’s handbook for further reading and preparation.

6.   The parents submit health, medical, vaccination records, medical insurance, guardianship and liability release forms. KoAm carefully inspects each applicant’s records.

7.  With KoAm’s knowledge and understanding of the applicant’s qualifications, interests, preferred activities, and aspirations, KoAm staff in the U.S. and Korea work to place a 'right-fit' student with a 'right-fit' family based on characteristics, personalities, routine, and lifestyle.

8.  Upon approval from both the host family and the Korean family, KoAm completes the match and encourages both families to communicate with one another to begin getting to know each other. Greeting and interacting with each other before the student’s arrival helps both parties to ‘break the ice’ before the actual exchange.

9.  The parents and students receive preparation for the Visa processing at the American Embassy in our office. Our pass rate is almost 100%.

10.  The students and the parents attend final orientation sessions before departure, where the students learn how to adjust smoothly to American school and family life.
